Local Meat Buyer's Guide: Whatcom County
Let’s take a little trip out into the county and let me show you where to buy pasture raised meat for your household.
North Cascades Meat Producer’s Coop, Mt Baker Highway
The North Cascades Meat Producer’s Coop is an excellent place to stock up your freezer. They carry pastured beef, lamb, and pork from a range of local producers including Alluvial Farms, Torgeson’s, Bittersweet Family Farm and more. Prices here range by quantity, you can call ahead and purchase in half and quarters. Pasture raised ground beef when purchased in 2.5 pound rolls is only $4.50 a pound. The NCMPC carries a range of butcher’s cuts, roasts, broils, grinds, bones, fats, and offal. One of the most economical options on the list. I highly recommend calling ahead and buying beef in shares, going in on a share with neighbors can be an even better way to get healthfully raised meat at really decent prices.

Widnor Farms, Custer WA
I can’t say enough good things about Widnor Farms, they work incredibly hard at making their farm stand very inviting, the whole family is there greeting the steady stream of customers every Saturday. Widnor carries pastured beef, lamb, chicken, eggs, raw milk, and forested pork. Brianna and Ryan spend a lot of time on the care, feed, condition, and housing of the animals they raise. At the stand you will also find handmade soap made with farm fresh ingredients, coffee, honey, wool yarn from their very own sheep, and more. Near the parking area there is a welcome committee of cows, goats, geese, guardian dog, and kitty. All of which are happy to see you. Their cuts are premium and recently we had a steak that was truly transcendent. I recommend reserving your order online for pickup before you go.

Ashmore Acres, Guide Meridian Bellingham
Ashmore Acres is an incredibly cute farm run by Angela Ashmore and family. They have a tiny self serve stand behind Our Diner on the Meridian Guide, open any time. Stocked with eggs, chicken in the freezer, and at times local breads, beverages, and pickles. Angela is a sweetheart with a love for their pasture raised flock. Their chicken is delicious and I try to keep at least one on hand, but this is hard when almost any night is a great night for Ashmore Chicken.
